Vita

Betül Yarar has been working as a senior researcher at the University of Bremen, Branch of Intercultural Education within the scope of a research project titled "In-formal Opportunities and Restrictions of German Universities Reflected in Experiences of Exiled Scholars" since 02.01.2019. Funded by the Volkswagen Stiftung, this project constitutes a module of an ongoing another project which is conducted by Prof. Dr. Yasemin Karakaşoğlu on in-formal opportunities and restrictions that Refugee Students face in German Universities. Before, she had conducted her own research in the same research unit as a Philipp Schwartz Fellow by the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in between 02.02.2017-01.31.2018.

She was graduated at the Department of Sociology, Middle East Technical University, Ankara/Turkey, in 1991. Then she got her Master Degree in Sociology, University of Essex in the UK. Her Ph.D. degree is also in Sociology at Lancaster University in the UK.

After her academic studies, she started working as an assistant professor at the Department of Sociology, Abant Izzet Baysal University in Bolu/Turkey. She then moved to the Faculty of Communication, Gazi University in Ankara/Turkey. She worked there first as an Associated Professor. In 2012 she got her professorship.

Her main reseach fields and academic interests are Neoliberalism, New Right, Popular Culture, Visual-Cultural Communication, Identity Politics, Body Politics, Gender Studies, Women's Movements in Turkey, Social History of Modern Turkey. 

Recently she has began to work on topics like Immigration and Higher Education (particularly in Turkey and Germany).
